The story of Mother 3, does not seem to connect to the previos Mother games, even though the end of Mother 2 lead to a sequel. The main character apears to be a cowboy names Flint, who has two twin sons, named Ryuka and Kraus. Flint also has a dog names Boney.

While the story was well planned, the development team was not used to working with 3D graphics. They had trouble developing it, and the game was delayed several times. It ran into more delays when, around 1998, it was announced as one of the launch titles for the 64DD, a disk-drive attachment for the Nintendo 64 which planned to enhance games. As the 64DD met it's doom in Japan, Mother 3 was moved off of its list of games. Then Mother 3 made an apearance at spaceworld '99, with screenshots, a playable demo, and a movie, making it look as though it would be realised.

But the game was again delayed over and over, and finaly in the summer of 2000, it was announced that Mother 3, was canceled. Mother 3 simply had too many problems at the time. And it was losing intrest because the new GameCube system was soon to come out, and the N64 would lose popularity.

There is still hope that Mother 3 will be realised someday for the GameCube though, since a lot of it was completed, such as the story and dialog.
