Well, hello and welcome to my article. I'm sort of new to article writing, so give me feedback on this, or I'll do something bad to you. Probably involving spoons.
Anyway, I was going to write about the pro's and cons to EarthBound 2/EarthBound 64/EarthBound 128/Mother 3/whatever you want to call it being 2D or 3D. Then I was going to have a list of things that could be pro or con depending on your opinion. I then found out that (as far as I can think of), there is not a single pro or con that is 100% fact, and 0% opinion. For example, one thing I had as a 2D pro was about how developing it in 2D would leave more time for plot, wackiness, and other EarthBoundy stuff. But I realized to a true graphics fanatic, that doesn't matter at all. And there isn't a single 3D pro I could use to convince some people that it could be better that way, so now I'm going to list some things that will be affected by the 2D/3D choice, and show the how that could be good or bad. Sound fun? Good.
- While a game lacking the graphics that most games are displaying today will turn many people away from EB, some people complain nowadays there are to many new people, and a 2D game would get us our sequel without swamping us n00bs who don't understand the true beauty of EB. On the other hand, 3D would mean more buyers which means more money for Nintendo, which means more sequels.
- Developing the game in 2D, will leave more time for EarthBoundy goodness such as great plotline, random townspeople wackiness (I'd like to tell you the story of the creature from the vegetable soup!), and silly side quests like returning someone's lost contact lenses to get their smelly socks, or giving people strawberry tofu in exchange for swear words. But with 3D graphics, we could improve on the great EarthBoundalisiousness we already have. Imagine going through peaceful rest valley with the wind blowing softly, crickets chirping in the background, ripples in the water when a fish jumps, and a sudden brilliant light show caused by the near miss of a l'il UFO's beam aimed at you. Enchanting, no? Then lets move on.
- While a 2D game will keep EarthBound style, a change may be what is needed. Look a the Legend of Zelda games, people said it should never be made into 3D, and Ocarina of Time is a truly great game that lost none of the Zelda touch, but simply added more. Then people thought the new cartoony look in Wind Waker was going to ruin it. While I don't actuly own the game, and have only played a short demo, I think it looks great, and I haven't heard anything bad said about it by anyone else yet, so perhaps this could work for EarthBound too. And in my opinion, if they do go 3D with it, I think the whole toon-shading thing would rock.
- As before mentioned, a 3D game would pull in all sorts of graphic fanatics, who may not care at all about EB or EB0 because of their less thrilling look. On the other hand, it may teach some of these people a thing or two about the importance of a game as a whole, which could get a little more intrest in other old and neglected games. But then a 2D game could get some old-school graphic loving people who never found EarthBound.
After thinking through all this, my opinion is that it really doesn't matter whether EB is 2D or 3D, but that rocks in every way possible just like the last two have.
Thank you for reading my article. Now is the time where you email me and tell me if it was good or bad or what I should do differently and all that stuff. Next time I'll try to use a fresher topic too. Thank you, and farewell.
