Hello there folks, Linda the Library Lady here. As you know, we often get visits from classes of Onett Public School. As such, we often get questions that aren't easy to answer. But as they say, the more you know, the more you realize how much information there is that you don't know. I'm a firm believer in that fact.
A few weeks ago; a student came to me after reading a book written by the famous child story writer, Dr. Saturn. He asked me why Mr. Saturn write differently, but retain the same written language. Not phrased in quite that matter of course. That I thought was a very interesting question. I decided I would try to find the answer. But as I would find, the adventure would change my life.
As the most obvious first step, I decided I would head to Saturn Valley. After speaking with the Mr. Saturn there, I found out that not only do they write differently but speak the same language differently as well. With some effort, I figured out how to understand their slurred speech. I asked about Dr. Saturn and they told me that he lives far away in the village of Twoson. I suppose he wanted to live in the country. Though I am surprised he would move away from the other Mr. Saturn, they're such kind hearted folks!
Even though the good doctor wasn't residing there, I tried asking the local residents the question. I first tried to show them samples of normal English print. I found that they were confused and said that I needed to learn to write properly. I of course took no offense to the observation, I suppose our form of writing seems as foreign to them as theirs does to us. Though I should say that I was not very surprised.
I decided I would visit Twoson to find the good Doctor and ask if he knew anything. I asked the local residents about his address. Without much trouble, I made it to his residence. His home while modest, has a wondrous charm. Without haste, he invited me in and offered me tea. I thanked him graciously and went inside. I must say; he is a polite, well kept man. Unlike the Mr. Saturns in Saturn Valley he spoke with a mastery of the English language in a clear, intelligible voice. Watching him balance the tea cup on his head was a feat in itself!
I mentioned that I was a librarian and we talked for a while about many common points of interest. While he does write children's books, I found out immediately that he knows a lot about the world. His favorite topics of discussion were quite different from what I had expected. Among other things, he loves mathematics and plays chess quite regularly with the other citizens. Not being very skilled at chess, I didn't ask him to play a game. Though I would love to challenge him at some point in the future.
He owns and operates a large computer system and even a high end Thinkpad! This was the first time I had come into contact with a computer. Noticing my ineptitude, he took a moment to teach me a bit about them. Looking back, he mentioned that he would only use Linux; but didn't tell me what “Linux” is, and what it's used for. Upon returning to the library, I got a book about Linux and learned quite a lot! I'll have to try to save money to buy one. If I do, I was told I had an open invitation to visit him to learn. Though he made sure to tell me that you can't learn everything in a day. To the citizens in Onett. As you know, we in the Onett Public Library haven't been graced with a single computer. If I may take a moment to say so; this would be a perfect opportunity to contact our mayor, BH Pirkle about this matter.
Anyway, I did get a chance to ask him why the Mr. Saturn write differently. He told me that a young girl had been left near the entrance of Saturn Valley about twenty years ago. Fortunately, the Mr. Saturn were kind enough to take care of her. She was at the age where she was learning to write and taught the Mr. Saturn. I found that to be an amazing twist to the tale! She did seem like a very happy person, no doubt that the Mr. Saturn treated her very well. I hadn't thought to ask him why he continued to use the style of writing the other Mr. Saturns use. I suppose I'll have to ask him that in a future letter or visit. Though he no doubt learned to speak well by our standards after living with the other residents of Twoson.
To tell the truth, I was initially surprised to see a young woman living with them. Oddly enough, in my time in Saturn Valley, she didn't mention the events Dr. Saturn described to me. But I'm sure that she didn't want to get in the way of my discussion with the Mr. Saturn. Though I would have been more than happy to hear her tale, after all: she was incidentally the very reason I was there.
I must say, I am amazed about what I had found. The result of a simple question yielded so much happiness for me! Not only did I get to meet all the Mr. Saturn and gain an appreciation for their high intelligence and aptitude for caring, but I also got to meet and befriend the famous Dr. Saturn. Who I might add, is a genuine renaissance man. I plan to head back soon to talk to the young woman they had cared for. I'm sure despite her rough treatment in being left behind, she gained the joy and love that the Mr. Saturns undoubtedly possess.
I hope you enjoyed hearing about my investigation. I'm sure I'll have more to investigate in the coming months.
