Around 1996, production started on the third addition on the popular RPG series in Japan known as Mother. It was run by Shigisato Itoi, the same person who made Mother 1 and 2, and was planned to be released for the N64. However, after many delays, in 2000 it was announced to be cancelled. It had too many problems, and with the GameCube soon to be released, it wasn't worth the time it was taking to make a game for a system that was going to be dead soon.
Mother 3 seems to keep the Mother tradition going, and have no link to the previous games. The main character seems to be a cowboy called Flint, his sons Ryuka and Kraus, and their dog Boney. The story apparently starts much like M2/EB, with a UFO crashing near the town Flint lives in, and him going to investigate the noise.
Mother 3, be it the same game or a new one, is planned to be released in Japan for the GBA. No release date is set yet, and like Mother 1+2, there is not yet any news on a North American release.
